Teacher education for lifelong learning

Until 2001 there wasn't any training programs for FE teachers.

Pre-service training: training happens before being employed.

In-service training: training happens concurrently while working.

Following the economic crisis of 1970s, radical changes in FE appeared.

The nature of teaching qualifications changed in 1990s. Hence we can find some competence-based NVQs (notional Vocational Q along with the usual Cert Ed.

The generic courses were influenced by competence- based training.

In 2001 there was a requirement for a teaching qualification. So, there was a growing number of qualified staff (comparing to the past)

Following the 2007 reforms, a framework of teaching qualifications was introduced.

Also in the qualification framework some awards/roles were presented as:

Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)

Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS)

Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS)

Certificate in Education and PGCE

Trainee teachers in FE couldn't find adequate integration of practical skills with theoretical elements of training due to the following reasons:

Poor links between teacher education and staff in FE

Individual trainees' reluctance in broadening their experience

Following the 2007 reforms, the Institute for Learning (IfL) could play a crucial role in FE system.

FE teachers have always advocated a professional organization.

In the FE system, occupational standards are outlined by the LLUK, while IfL provides support for individual teachers.
