The author doesn’t always tell you everything. You must figure outsome things on your own.

Example: The moon cast an eerie glow in Jake’s room. Suddenly, he saw a shadow by the window. Jake sat up in bed, frozen with fear.

You can tell that is probably night time, because the moon is out and

Jake is in bed.

Key Words: you can tell or probably.

These questions ask you to find which statements are facts something that is true and can be proven and which statements are opinions; tells how a person feels about something, but cannot be proven.

Key Words: most, best, nicest, or greatest.

4. Identifying Author’s Purpose (AP)

 These questions ask you why the author wrote the passage.  You can remember the four

reasons by remembering P.I.D.E.

P-for persuade

I-information (inform)

D-describe

E-entertain

The writer uses words in such a way that their meaning is different from their usual meaning.

Example: someone who told a secret might say, “I spilled the beans”, meaning, I didn’t mean to tell a secret.

The questions about the best summary of a passage, ask you about the main points of the passage. 

First ask yourself, what is the main idea of the passage?

 A good summary is closer to the main idea than to any single detail found in the passage.

This sentence tells what the passage is mostly

about.  The question might ask you to choose the best title.

This tells more about the main idea. The question might ask you about something that was stated in the passage. Look back to find the answer.

The question will ask you to remember and put events or details in order (sequence).

Example: beginning, middle, ending.

Key Words: first, then, last, after,

before, or finally.

A cause is something that happens (an action). An effect is the result of what happened. 

Ex: “I forgot to set my alarm clock (cause), so I was late for school (effect).”

Key Words: why, what happened, or because.

*These questions ask you to find out how two things are alike or different.

Key Words: most like, different, alike or similar.

This is something you think will happen in the future (next). You will not find the answer to these questions in the passage. Use clues from the passage to make a good guess.

Theme is the moral or lesson the character learns.
