Geography: Map Skills and Practice

Political maps show political boundaries.

These boundaries, or borders, are agreed upon by governments of states and countries throughout the world.

Topographic maps is a type of map with much detail and quantitative representation of relief, usually using contour lines. Many topographic maps also include both natural and human-made features

Special Topics Maps show information on a specific subject throughout a place. 

The physical map of the world displays all the continents and various geographical features across the world. Water bodies such as oceans, seas, lakes, rivers

The study of the world, its people, and the landscapes they create

The human and physical features that make a place unique

A part of the world with one or more common features that make it different from surrounding areas

When you write down coordinates for a map, you first write down the latitude, then the longitude. 

Lat is flat.

A coordinate line that measures degrees of measurement from East to West

Longitude is "long-"itude

A coordinate line that measured distance from North to South

Latitude is your "x" axis

Longitude is your "y" axis

You take the number degree of each and see where those lines come together.

By doing this, we can pinpoint places on a map.

There are 2 types of location:

1. Relative (describes a location based off of what is near or around it)

2. Exact (like a street address or something specific like coordinates)
