Rounding

Step 1: Circle the place value of the digit to be rounded. This is the rounding digit.  

Step 2: Look to the neighboring digit on the right.

Step 3: If the neighboring digit is less than five (0 - 4), keep the rounding digit the same.

If the neighboring digit is 5 or greater (5-9), change the rounding digit by going up

42 .... 4 is the rounding digit. 2 is the neighbor. 2 is less than 5 so the rounding digit stays the same. 42 rounded is 40

31 ....3 is the rounding digit. 1 is the neighbor. 1 is less than 5 so the rounding digit stays the same. 31 rounded is 30.

48 .... 4 is the rounding digit. 8 is the neighbor. 8 is more than 5 so we add one to the rounding digit. 48 rounded is 50

36 ....3 is the rounding digit. 6 is the neighbor. 6 is more than 5 so the rounding digit changes by 1. 36 rounded is 40.
