Quick Overview of Sentence Structure
Simple Sentence (independent clause) needs a subject and a predicate - John ate pizza.
Compound Sentences combine two simple and related independent clauses with a comma FANBOYS - John ate pizza, but I ate a salad.
FANBOYS = For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So

Commas can be used in different ways
They can separate adjectives - Steve had a bright, happy smile
They can be used to indicate a list - I need to buy Oreos, carrots, and ice cream.
They can separate two Independent clauses (simple sentences) - John went to the park, so I stayed home.
They are used to properly punctuate dates - July 4, 1776

Comma Tests...
When commas separate two Independent Clauses (simple sentences), you can substitute a period for the comma FANBOYS
John ate pizza, but I had a salad. ---> John ate pizza. I had a salad.
John ate pizza, and did homework. ---> John ate pizza. did homework.

Essential and Nonessential Clauses
As essential clause is not set off by commas because it is a necessary part of the sentence. For instance, it will clarify a general noun so that readers understand the specifics.
The man who ordered another double anchovy pizza claims to have a pet dolphin in his backyard pool.
A nonessential clause decorates the specific noun, but it doesn't specify the noun.
Mr. Isles, who ordered another double anchovy pizza, claims to have a pet dolphin in his backyard pool.
