Cellular Respiration

• We can breathe!

• Plants give us oxygen

• We can eat!

• Plants give us food and they give our food food (moo)

• Trees take in carbon dioxide

• Trees release oxygen

• Animals breathe in oxygen

• Animals breathe out carbon dioxide.

If we breathe IN oxygen but we breathe OUT carbon dioxide... Where does the carbon come from?

• The CO2 that we breathe OUT comes from the Carbohydrates that we EAT!

• C6H12O6 + O2 -> CO2 +Energy

• Plants STORE their "energy" from the sun in the form of carbohydrates.

• Humans and animals eat those carbohydrates and we use it as "energy" to fuel our bodies.

• As we chew, swallow and digest our food we get nutrients and energy

• The stomach and small intestines break down starch into simple sugars.

• Those simple sugars give us energy!

• Those simple sugars are taken in by our cells.

• The mitochondira of the cell breaks down the sugars and releases carbon dioxide and energy (ATP)
