New England Settlement Part 1

"We Puritans arrived in Massachusetts in 1630 and named our first settlement Boston. The year before that, the good men had already elected me, John Winthrop as their governor. Next, we set about constructing our villages. Most villages had at least a school and a large common building that served as both meeting house and church. We arrived in the summer, which gave us enough time to get settled before winter. Puritan parents often treated their children like grown-ups, so kids helped in a big way. Our villages began to do very well. Our new settlements were to be like a city upon a hill that would show all people how God wanted them to live. Each family made a covenant, or contract with the church. Families promised to follow Puritan rules. If they didn't we would make them leave the community. "
