In 1523, Giovanni da Verrazzano was sent by the French on a voyage

Verrazzano landed in NOW present day New York Bay in 1524

In 1609, Henry Hudson made the 1st North American land claim for the Dutch

Cornelius Mey started the settlement of New Netherlands in North America amd would later become New Jersey

In 1660, the first town of the colony in New Netherlands, Bergen, was founded and it is now called Jersey City.

New Netherlands stretched across what is now Northern New Jersey

Swedish, Finnish, and German settlers arrived to the South of New Netherlands and settled in Lower Delaware

The Swedish, Finnish, and German settlers called the Southern section New Sweden

To make money. EX: Fur Trade, Trading with Native Americans

Religious Freedom. EX: Jewish and Quakers were being persecuted (punished) and came to the new world to practice their religion freely

In 1647, Peter Stuyvesant was sent to govern New Netherlands

Stuyvesant was not well liked and his actions were harsh

The King of England, Charles II gave the land of New Netherlands to his brother, the Duke of York

Charles II sent over English fleet to take New Netherlands from the Dutch

Peter Stuyvesant surrendered peacefully to England and many Dutch colonists stayed even when England took control
