Senate Qualifications

• At least 30 years old

• U.S. citizen for 9 years

• Live in state elected from

• Every state gets two senators and there are 100 total

• Only 1/3 of senators are up for election every two years

• Senators serve 6 year terms

• The longest serving senator is the leader or president pro tempore

• The vice-president is the President of the Senate

The Senate

• The Senate was designed to create stability and that is why they serve longer and only 1/3 are up for election ever two years

• The Senate works closely with the president and must approve the president's appointments

• Supreme Court Justices, Ambassadors and Cabinet members must be approved by the Senate with a majority vote

• The Senate also must approve any treaty with another nation with a 2/3 vote

• The vice-president votes only when there is a tie

Impeachment

• The Senate acts as the jury in the impeachment process

• The Senate is given the evidence from the House of Representatives and decides guilt or innocence

• A federal judge or president can be impeached

• The punishment for impeachment is removal from office and you can never hold federal office again in any branch of government

• 2/3 of the Senate must vote to remove a president or judge through the impeachment process

• ​The Chief Justice attends the impeachment and answers legal questions
