Before the war, each state had its own constitution.

After the war, the states joined together to establish a Federal Government under the Articles of Confederation

The Articles turned out to be a weak system of government and this needed to be changed.

Some founding fathers wanted to abolish slavery

Southern states refused to sign the Constitution if slavery were abolished
