2
States of Water
Water can occur in three states.
solid, liquid, and gas
3
Solid Water
Ice is frozen water.
The particles in ice are closely packed together.
Freezing is the process by which liquid water is transformed into ice.
Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit.
4
Liquid Water
Water ( is a transparent fluid which forms the world's streams, lakes, oceans and rain, and is the major constituent of the fluids of organisms.
The chemical formula of water is H2O.
A water molecule contains two (2) Hydrogen (H) atoms one oxygen (O) atom.
Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius or 212 degrees Fahrenheit.
5
Water as a Gas
Vapor is water in gas form.
Water vapor is always present in the air.
6
Water can Change States
Boiling is the action of bringing a liquid to the temperature at which it bubbles and turns to vapor.
Evaporation is a process where liquids change to a gas or vapor. Water changes to a vapor or steam from the energy created when molecules bounce into one another because they're heated up.
7
Water can Change states (part2)
Condensation is the process where water vapor becomes liquid. It is the reverse of evaporation, where liquid water becomes a vapor.
Examples of Condensation: Having a cold soda on a hot day, the can "sweats." Water molecules in the air as a vapor hit the colder surface of the can and turn into liquid water.
8
Water is Life
All living organisms need water to live.
Some types of water are:
- Freshwater or naturally occurring water.
- Saltwater water containing large amounts of salt.
- Ground water is water from rain that flows on the surface and collects underground.
