Notes will fall on either lines or spaces. Which line or space they appear on tells us the name of the note.

What do you do when you see a note that you don't know?
Use your musical alphabet! Follow your letters backwards or forwards to figure out what the note is.

What do you do when a note isn't on the staff?
The lines above or below the note are called ledger lines. These lines act just like extensions of the staff lines and spaces! You can count them just like you would other notes.
