Prime and Composite Numbers

Prime number - a number that has exactly two factors, one and itself.

Example: 29 is a prime number because its' only factors are 1 and 29.


Composite number - a number that has more than two factors.

Example: 39 is a composite number because 1, 39, 3 and 13 are all factors of 39.


Important Notes** 1 is neither prime nor composite and 2 is the only EVEN prime number.

An expression is a mathematical phrase, without an equal sign, that may contain numbers, unknowns (variables) and/or operations.


An equation is a mathematical phrase, with an equal sign, that may contain numbers, unknowns (variables) and/or operations.


When we are reading a word problem and finding the matching expression or equation, we have to use our knowledge of math keywords to help us decide which operations are really happening!
