Kinds of Sentences

All sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark.

Different kinds of sentences have different purposes.

The type of punctuation mark at the end of a sentence is determined by the sentence's purpose.

Declarative sentences: make a statement and end with a period (.)

Interrogative sentences: ask a question and end with a question mark (?)

Exclamatory sentences: express strong feelings and end with an exclamation point (!)

Imperative sentences: give commands or make requests and end with a period (.). *A strong imperative sentence might end with an exclamation point (!)*

Declarative: Ecologists study relationships in nature.

Interrogative: Do animals and plants depend on each other?

Exclamatory: What important work ecologists do!

Imperative: Look at these animals.

Ecologists spread their message in many ways. ~ declarative

They may appear before meetings of private organizations. ~ declarative

Do they also write magazine articles? ~ interrogative
