Adjectives modify nouns and pronouns

To locate them easier, you can ask yourself:

What kind / Which one(s) / How many

"Red" "Big" "Pretty" 'Tall"

All words that can modify or describe a noun or pronoun

They have a fixed position

1) Before the noun it modifies

Example: The athlete has a big nose

Adjective: Big

Noun it is modifying: Nose

2) After a linking verb, serving as a ______ __________

Answer: Subject Complement

Example: The student is smart

Liinking Verb: is

Adjective (Subject Complement): Smart

These words modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs

Adverbs commonly end in -ly , but that is not always the case

Adverbs tell us how, where, when, how much, how often

They are very interchangeable in sentences

Examples: Quietly, Extremely

In the sentence, "The princess lived happily ever after."

Adverb: Happily

Verb it is modifying: Lived

"Happily" could also be changed throughout the sentence to:

"The princess happily lived ever after" OR

"Happily, the princess lived ever after"
