Over time, Great Britain took control of their colonies, and colonies originally begun by a charter became royal colonies. As royal colonies, they no longer operated based on their charter. Instead, the King of England and the British Parliament now made the rules. Before the French and Indian war, Great Britain had let the colonies take care of themselves and work on their own to solve their problems. But after the French and Indian War, Great Britain decided they needed to have more control over the colonies. So, Great Britain got serious about its imperial policy.

The colonists needed a local government to deal with everyday issues since Great Britain was all the way across the Atlantic Ocean. Colonists established colonial legislatures to make laws for each colony.

The king of England, appointed a colonial governor in each colony. Colonial governors were in the highest position of authority in the colonies. The colonial governors monitored the colonial legislatures and enforced British laws.

However, some colonists resented the power of the colonial governors-- along with all the other controls-- and resistance to imperial policy began!
