​The Mississippian culture lived in the eastern portion of the United States. They lived in the area around the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. This is represented in green on the map. This area is known as the Midwest region of the United States today.

​The Mississippian culture started along the banks of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers. They built "Wattle and Daub" houses. These houses were made with a wooden frame and covered in grass and mud. They built homes in rows around a central plaza. They were known for building mounds with piles of dirt. These mounds were used for housing the chief, holding ceremonies, and burying their dead.
