Answering the Main Idea, Too Broad and Too Narrow Questions

1. THE TRUE MAIN IDEA STATEMENT WAS WRITTEN FIRST.

A. IT TELLS WHO OR WHAT THE SUBJECT IS AND ANSWERS THE QUESTIONS (Does what? Is What?

THE "TOO NARROW" Statement is in line with the Main Idea, but only expresses part of it.

THE "TOO BROAD" Statement is also in line, but it is too general in scope.

MAIN IDEA: Who or what the subject is and/or is doing.

TOO NARROW: A supporting detail that expresses only part of what the subject is or is doing.

TOO BROAD: Maybe this only mentions the subject. If the main idea was how salmon travel to the ocean, the Broad statement might be "Salmon are fish" It doesn't give any detail as to who or what is or is doing.

B. North Medford has nine main buildings with classrooms, so it is tough to find your way around.

This is the MAIN IDEA because it mentions North Medford High School (subject) what it has, what it is, or what it does.

If you look at the other two and ask:

Is this More or less specific?

Is this only one detail of another statement?

Can this be part of a general statement?

MAIN IDEA

A. North Medford is a High School in Medford.

This is Obviously too general or broad compared to the other statements, and if you look at the other two statements, they are both more specific or detailed.

TOO BORAD

C. Mr. Bryant's class is in the A building.

This is narrow because it is specific to one building at the school, and it can be considered a supporting detail. Also, one classroom out of a bunch is specific and narrow when you look at the Main Idea.
