Roanoke and Jamestown

The French used their land for fur trading.

The Spanish were busy conquering and spreading Christianity.

The British chose to colonize their new land.

Sir Walter Raleigh sent scouts to find a good place for a colony. They discovered a place called Roanoke Island (island off the coast of NC).

1585 - After a hard winter, the first group of colonists gave up and went back to England.

1587 - A second group, which included families, made the voyage back. It was led by John White.

John White returned to England to replenish supplies.

When he returned, the colonist were gone.

This is often referred to as the "Lost Colony of Roanoke."

The first successful English colony was established in 1607 and was named Jamestown.

A joint stock company is which investors bought shares, or ownership, with hopes that the company made money.

Their hope was that the settlers that were brought to Jamestown would find gold and establish trade.

The Powhatan tribe helped the people of Jamestown for a period of time.

Pocohantas is a Native American woman famous for assisting John Smith and the residents of Jamestown.

With the help of the tribe, the colonists learned how to survived.
