Colonial leaders in New England placed importance on being able to read in order to understand the Bible and the government’s laws.

Colonial leaders believed citizens should be able to read, write, and have basic academic skills. However, most colonial jobs did not required formal education. Many jobs required hands-on skills that were best taught through apprenticeships (carpentry, butchering, baking)
