How Memory Impacts How the Brain Learns

Using Wait Time to Increase Student Participation: I would use this strategy because often times a question is asked, but I am not sure how long I truly am waiting for all students to have an opportunity to retrieve the information. Now that I know more about the rates of retrieval, I can allow for at least 5 seconds or more of wait time. This will allow more students to process and practice the information, allow for higher order responses, build confidence, and increase participation for slower learners. How they learn to process and the effort they put in is first build in the younger grades and can be carried with them throughout their academic careers.  

Using Chunking to Enhance Retention: I will use this strategy because in kindergarten, students are learning how to read. By learning to chunk spelling patterns, they will become more fluent in reading whole words. Then they can chunk whole words to makes sense of a whole phrase or sentence. This will help them become fluent readers and kickstart their comprehension skills.
