Quotation marks come in pairs (" ")

They are used to show someone is speaking.

The first word in a quote should always be capitalized.

Example: The teacher announced, "Be sure to check your answers before you turn in your test."

Notice there is one set of quotation marks at the beginning and one at the end of the words the teacher said.

Remember pronouns and antecedents MUST agree!

Example: The students were taking a test today. It was a bit nervous before they started.

It cannot be the correct answer because they are referring to the students being nervous, so the pronoun should be They.

Correction: The students were taking a test today. They were a bit nervous before they started.

To show ownership

Example: Jaden's pencil means that the pencil belongs to Jaden

Example: Jordan's car means the car belongs to Jordan

To form contractions

It's=it is

Don't=do not

I've=I have

Shouldn't=Should not

Couldn't=Could Not
