Ozone depletion
Ozone is a gas. There is a layer of ozone
high up in the atmosphere.
The sun emits ultraviolet light. These
UV rays can cause skin cancer and eye
damage in humans.
Ozone layer protects organisms on the
Earth from harmful UV radiation. Ozone
absorbs UV rays from the Sun.
10
“Hole” in the Ozone Layer
1985, scientist discovered that there were less ozone, especially in the Antarctic spring. they called this the ozone hole.
The hole is currently switching through phases of
growth and diminishment, but it has been stabilizing
over the past few days. The forecast from CAMS
(Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS)—a
European Union ) suggests it will remain small this
week, and that it’s still on track to become the smallest
hole seen in 30 years, said Antje Inness-Scientist.
11
What causes the ozone hole
Gases called CFS ( Chloro-fluorocarbon ) caused the problems with the ozone layer.
CFCs are man-made. They were used in
air-conditioners, refrigerators and aerosol cans.
CFCs rise up high into the atmosphere. They react with
ozone and break it down.

Summary
Pollution means adding harmful things to the environment.
Ozone is gas found in a layer high up in the atmosphere. It protects us from the ultraviolet radiation.
CFC's have damaged the ozone layer over the antarctic, but are now banned and the ozone layer is recovering.

Activity: Mini Project
