Desert scenery

  • In most hot deserts, the wind has blown sand away , leaving pebbles or even bare rock.

  • Shallow lakes form in some deserts after rain

  • Else where there are mountains and steep rocky slopes. some of these have been carved into interesting shapes by wind.

Desert plants

  • Few plants are able to survive in the desert.

  • Some plants have long roots to reach water deep underground.

  • The roots of the acacia tree of Africa may go down to 30m to reach water.

  • Mesquite bush of North America sends its roots down to a depth of 50 m.

Desert animals

  • Few animals live in the desert.

  • Animals in a desert get water from the food they eat.

  • Most animals sleep during the day and come out only at night when it is cooler.

  • Best known desert animal is a camel. It can go along time without water. It can loose about one-third of the weight of its body and still live. It can drink up to 115 Litres or more in a few minutes ones it find water.
