In the past it was a time when families used to remember their dead but also celebrated new life, making it a happy event too. In the 21st century, this tradition has become popular again. Maori celebrate it with kites, hot-air baloons and fireworks. 

is traditional Maori greeting today used both in formal and informal occasions. If you want to do a hongi, you hold the other person's hand, as in a handshake, you lean forward and you gentl press your noses and forheads together. 

refers to anything highly prized or a treasure. Maori carvings, art, artefacts, land, natural resources, language and even spiritual beliefs.
