PAST SIMPLE NEGATIVE

To form the Past Simple in Negative form we use DIDN'T + INFINITIVE

e.g. He didn't go to school last week.

They didn't work in September.

PAST SIMPLE INTERROGATIVE

(WH) + DID + SUBJECT + INFINITIVE

e.g. Where did you go?

Did you listen to music?

When do we use the Past Simple?

• We use the Past Simple to talk about an action that started and finished in the past.

• We use expressions like YESTERDAY, AGO, LAST week, year, etc.

• We use PAST SIMPLE + PAST SIMPLE to talk about actions that happened one after the other. e.g. I got up and had a shower.

PAST CONTINUOUS +

WAS / WERE + VERB+ING

e.g. They were running in the park when I saw them.

PAST CONTINUOUS -

WASN'T / WEREN'T + VERB+ING

e.g. They weren't dancing.

PAST CONTINUOUS INTERROGATIVE

(WH) + WAS / WERE + SUBJECT + VERB+ING

e.g. Where were you staying?

Were you staying in a nice hotel?

When do we use the Past Continuous?

• We use the Past Continuous to talk about two past actions that happened at the same time.

• The action that lasts longer is expressed in Past Continuous. The action that takes less time is expressed in Past Simple.

• When the phone rang I was listening to music.

When do we use the Past Continuous?

• WHEN + PAST SIMPLE

• WHILE + PAST CONTINUOUS

• While I was having a shower someone knocked on the door.

• I was having a shower when someone knocked on the door.

When do we use the Past Continuous?

• We can also use Past Continuous + Past Continuous to talk about two long actions that happen at the same time.

• While I was having a shower my sister was talking on the phone.
