A physical network path is setup before communication starts

The connection channel is dedicated to the session

The channel will be released once transmission complete

Data are splitted into smaller chunk, called packets

Packet will include header data to identifies the source, destination and other control data

Each packet will take its own route from source to destination

On the Internet, packets are routed by router, a network that forward packet to destinations

Sometimes refer as transmission rate

Measures how much data a channel is capable of transmitting

Usually measured in bits per second (bps)

Transmit whole set of data from source to destination

No predefined route

Data sent to one node and is temporarily store in the node, and later forward to another node

Slow, but can avoid traffic congestion

Not suitable for real time communications
