Base Unit in Metric System is liter (L)

The Basic Unit in the metric system for length is meter (m).

The tool used to measure length is a meter stick.

The Basic Unit in the metric system for mass is gram (g)

The tool used to measure mass is a triple beam balance.

Prefixes or parts that we can add to the beginning of a word change the meaning of the measurement.

A basic unit can be made to be bigger or smaller by adding a prefix.

Kilo means 1000

Kilogram= 1000 grams

Kilometer= 1000 meters

Kiloliter= 1000 liters

1 gram is about the size of a dime, 1 kilogram is about the size of a book

1 meter is about 3 feet, 1 kilometer is 333 feet. You would use meter to measure furniture and kilometers to measure distance when driving.

1 liter is about the size of a large water bottle, 1 kiloliter is used to measure things like swimming pools.
