Solving Absolute Value Equations

An absolute value equation is an equation that contains and absolute value expression.

We can solve these types of equations by solving TWO related linear equations.

3

|x - 4| = 6

 ∣x − 4∣=6 and ∣x − 4∣=−6\left|x\ -\ 4\right|=6\ and\ \left|x\ -\ 4\right|=-6  then solve for x

4

 ∣x∣=10\left|x\right|=10

 ∣x∣=10 and ∣x∣=−10\left|x\right|=10\ and\ \left|x\right|=-10

5

Multiple Choice

How would you set up this absolute value equation |y -2| = 10

1

|x - 2| = 10 and |x - 2| = 10

2

|y - 2|= 10 and |y - 2| = -10

6

Open Ended

Now solve for |y - 2| = 10 and |y - 2| = -10

7

Multiple Choice

Solve |m + 3| = 7

1

m=2 and m=5

2

m=-10 and m=4

3

m=1 and m=-1

8

Poll

Solve |x| = 13

x=-13 and x=13

x=9 and x=-9

x= 0

9

Multiple Choice

Solve |q - 8| = 14

1

q = -6 and q = 22

2

q = 34 and q=-6

3

q=0 and q = -0
