1
Types of Compounds
How many different ways can you slice the pie?

2
Classifying Compounds
By definition, a compound is two or more elements chemically bounded together in a uniform composition with new properties
These can be classified in four different and overlapping ways
Organic vs Inorganic
Binary vs Non-binary
Molecular vs Ionic
Acid, base, salt or None of the above
3
Organic vs Inorganic
What do all of the organic compounds seem to have in common?
What do all of the inorganic compounds seem to have in common?
So the required elements to be considered organic are C and H (O is NOT required)
4
Multiple Select
Select all of the compounds from the following list that are organic.
CO2
CH4
C2HCl3O
Na2HPO4
C7H7NO
5
Binary vs Non-binary
Let's think about prefixes people, what does the prefix "bi" mean?
Ok great, so two what's?
Keep it simple, two capital letters
Binary = only 2 capital letters in the formula (2 different elements)
Non-binary = more than 2 capital letters in the formula (3 or more different elements)
We are NOT looking at how MANY of a specific element there are, but how many DIFFERENT elements there are
6
Multiple Select
Select all of the binary compounds in the list.
O2
K2O
NH4Cl
C6H12O6
H2O2
7
Molecular vs Ionic
This is where you need to know your Periodic Table...
Ionic STARTS w/ a metal or (NH4)+
Molecular NEVER has a metal ANYWHERE
So look for metals, they're anything to the left of that stair-step line thing
EXCEPT HYDROGEN - NOT A METAL
Nonmetals are that tiny little cluster on thew top right corner
8
Multiple Select
Select all of the ionic compounds out of the list.
CaF2
C3H8
Mg3(PO4)2
Li2Cr2O7
NH4Cl
9
Acid vs Base vs Salt vs None
Acids start with H and are molecular compounds
Bases are special ionic compounds that end with OH (mostly....)
Salts are all of the REST of the ionic compounds that AREN'T bases
Molecular compounds that don't start w/ H are none of these things
10
Multiple Choice
Select the answer that correctly identifies the following compounds: Ca(OH)2, HNO3, MgF2, CH3OH
Ca(OH)2 = base, HNO3 = none, MgF2 = salt, CH3OH = base
Ca(OH)2 = base, HNO3 = acid, MgF2 = salt, CH3OH = none
Ca(OH)2 = base, HNO3 = none, MgF2 = salt, CH3OH = acid
Ca(OH)2 = base, HNO3 = acid, MgF2 = salt, CH3OH = base

Poll
Would you like more practice problems to try on your own?
Yes please!
No I think I'm good with this topic
No, I know I won't do them anyway
Yes, but I find this sort of thing on my own so don't go out of your way to make something
