6.RP.A.2
Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b ≠ 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship.
Note: Expectations for unit rates in this grade are limited to non-complex fractions.
3
Examples of Unit Rates
This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar.
We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of $5 per hamburger.
4
Unit Rates
have denominators equal to one
labeled units
Ex. $2/1 ticket, $2 per ticket, $2:1 ticket
Ex.
teacher30 students or 30 students/teacher
5
Let’s find the unit rate of each real-world situation! Ex. Kenny goes to the grocery store and buys 5 pounds of apples for $8.40
Step 1: Write a rate in fraction form.
Step 2: Divide to find the unit rate.
5 pounds8.40 dollars ---> $8.40 ÷ 5 pounds = $1.68 per pound

Example Problem
On a bicycle you can travel 20 miles in 4 hours. What is the distance you can travel in 1 hour and the amount of time required to travel 1 mile? HINT: Set and solve using a table with equal measures or a proportion.
7
Solution:
You can travel 5 miles in 1 hour written as
1 hour5 miles and it takes 51 of an hour to travel each mile.8
