Text that explains how something works or how to use instruction/operation manuals e.g. how to use the video, the computer, the tape recorder, the photocopier, the fax.

Text that deals with human behavior, e.g. how to live happily, how to succeed.

The Purpose/Goal of Procedure Text

• to tell the reader how to do or make something. 

Generic Structure of Procedure Text

• Goal : It is containt the purpose of the text. (e.g : How to make spagheti)

  
  

• Material or Ingredient : it is containt of the materials that used in the process. (e.g : the material to cook omelette are egg, onion, vegetable oil, etc)

  
  

• Step : it is containt of the steps to make something in the goal. (e.g : first, wash the tomatoes, onion, ...., second cut the onions becomes slice. . . )

Language Features of Procedure Text

•  Using Simple Present Tense, often Imperative Sentence patterns (Command), for example, Cut, Do not mix, and so on.

• Using active verbs, such as turn, put, do, mix, etc.

•  Using connectives (Conjunction) to sort of activities, such as then, while, next, etc.

• Using adverbials (Adverbs) to express detail the time, place, manner accurate, for example, for five minutes, 2 hours, etc

•  Using the temporal conjunction such as first, second, then, next, finally, etc.
