DO NOW:
Think back to working with the Animal Cards and Bird Cards.
What are some ways you observed that organisms can be similar or different?
3
Remember we are working as wildlife biologists to Investigation this Question:
What are some ways that organisms can be similar or different?
4
THINK
Organisms have some traits that we can’t observe by looking.
Think for a moment about a trait of birds that we couldn’t observe by using our sense of sight.
5
When scientists observe, they may use any of the five senses.
Today, you’ll get to use your sense of hearing to listen to the sounds of the birds that you looked at in the last lesson.
6
Activity 1 : Identifying Songbirds
We will use the Bird Cards again. This time we will separate them into two groups based on the similarities and differences you hear in their bird sounds.
7
Class Discussion
Talk about one similarity and one difference you heard in the sounds these birds make.
8
Let’s listen to the sounds made by the birds on Card 1 and Card 2.
9
Sorting Birds by Their Sounds
You will have 3 groups. Group 1, Group 2, and Not Sure. Card 1 goes in Group 1. Stack the other cards in order.
Think about whether card 2 is similar to the sound of card 1?
Group similar bird sounds together. If you not sure where to the belongs put the card under Not Sure
10
On a sheet page make a chart my this.
I will play each sound in order, you list the number into the proper groups.
11
Let’s listen to the sounds made by the birds on Card 1 and Card 2.

12
Let’s listen to the sounds made by the birds on Card 3 and Card 4.
13
Let’s listen to the sounds made by the birds on Card 5 and Card 6.

Multiple Select
Looking at Ms. Early list, which group do you think are songbirds?
Group 1
Group 2
20
Yes group 1!
These songbirds have many of the same traits, including the trait of singing. Remember, having many of the same traits can mean that organisms are closely related.
21
Northern Cardinal
Closely related to all songbirds.
However, it is even more closely related to the next birds we will see.
22
These birds are all cardinals and they are closely related.
What are some similar traits they all have?
What is some variation you can observe?

Graystone National Park
Remember, we are wildlife biologists. Today, we will find out exactly what our mission as wildlife biologists will be.
26
Near the park, there is a school named Graystone Elementary School.
The second grade class is interested in learning more about the wolves in the park.
27
The students are very curious about this pack of wolves. They are a species known as gray wolves.
Let’s see what we can observe about them.
28
Wolf 44
The students are especially interested in the wolf that is light gray.
We will call it Wolf 44.
