When to do designs?

You should be creating kimono designs after every part or research.

This includes designer research, or experimental research (such as the techniques we try out in class).

Your designs MUST relate to your research - this is to show that you are using your research and it has a purpose in your project.

Whenever you are adding research in your sketchbook..

ask yourself - WHY IS IT IN HERE AND HOW IS IT INFLUENCING MY CREATIVE JOURNEY AS A DESIGNER?

What you could include:

• stylisted illustrations of the garment or textile design

• Technical flat diagrams of the garment design to show the garment would look on a coat hanger

• Pattern cutting notes and diagrams- how you could piece the garment together

• Different angles of your design (front, back, sides)

• Close ups of important design features, such as a textile design or pattern cutting feature.

A good visual jounrey - here we can see the designer research, the textile experiment, and then garment designs linking all the research together. It's really important that your designs and research are TOGETHER in your book to tell a story.

Designs can be the main feature of your pages, with smaller research filtered around the page - your designs are the what are important. Large designs are better in your book and portfolio.

An easy and effective method for drawing various designs in proportion - get images of a tailors bust and draw over them. This also helps for showing your design at different angles.

Here we have example of existing garments for shape ideas, pattern cutting steps, illustrations and research. Very informative design pages.

As you develop your ideas, you should also be including fabric swatches of what you think they garment could be made from.

You can annotate and provide close ups of surface design too!

Research should also start providing you specific colour palettes to design from... like this image here!

Your task for today (including homework)

• Go back through your sketchbook and focus on a page that has research on (designer, experimentation and summer project).

• Create 5 - 8 Kimono SURFACE designs inspired by that research.

• Use presentation methods discussed in this session to show a visual journey in your design where possible. Consider technical flats, stylised illustration, pattern cutting examples, different angles of a design, samples etc.
