What are the four steps to solving a mathematical problem?

3

Objective

  • Translate between words and algebra

  • Evaluate algebraic expressions

4

Vocabulary

  • Variable - a letter or a symbol used to represent a value that can change.

  • Constant - a value that does not change.

  • Numerical expression - may contain only constants and/or operations.

  • Algebraic expression - may contain variables, constants, and/or operations.

    Evaluate

5

Translate

You will need to translate between algebraic expressions and words to be successful in math. The diagram below shows some of the ways to write mathematical operations with words.

6

Translate

  • +, Plus, Sum, Increased by

  • −, Minus, Difference, Less than

  • x, Times, Product, Equal groups of

  • ÷, Divided by, quotient

7

Examples of Translated Expressions

  • x+3 we can say,"the sum of x and 3" or we can say, "x increased by 3"

  • m-7 we can say,"the difference of m and 7" or we can say, "7 less than m"

  • 2(y) we can say, " 2 times y" or we can say, "the product of 2 and y"

  • k÷5 we can say, " k divided by 5" or we can say, " the quotient of k and 5"
