Latitudes and Longitudes

1)The Equator is an important line of latitude. It is an imaginary line half way between the North and South Poles. Countries near to the Equator are very hot as this is the Earth’s closest point to the Sun. 

2) The Arctic Circle lies at 66.5 degrees north Antarctic . 

3) The Antarctic Circle lies at 66.5 degrees south.

 4) The Tropic of Cancer is 23.5 degrees north of the Equator.

 5) The Tropic of Capricorn lies 23.5 degrees south of the Equator.

Lines of Latitude are imaginary lines that circle the globe in an 

east-west direction. Latitudes measure how far north or south a point lies from the Equator. Lines of latitude are also called parallels, as they are parallel to the Equator and will never meet. 

The Equator is at 0°(degrees) latitude and separates the Earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Locations north of the equator have latitudes between 0° (the equator) and 90° N (the North Pole).Locations south of the equator have latitudes between 0° (the equator) and 90°S (the South Pole)

Lines of Longitudes are imaginary lines that run from the North Pole to the South Pole. 

Lines of longitude measure how far east or west a point on Earth lies from the prime meridian. (Longitude lines are also called meridians.) 

The prime meridian, the line of longitude that passes through Greenwich, England, is the 0° longitude line. 

Longitude values to the east of the prime meridian can be specified by adding E to the number of degrees it is from the Prime Meridian. (Between 0 and 180 ° E)

CLIMATE: This is the average weather condition of an area over a 

long period of time. 

1) THE TROPICAL ZONE/TORRID ZONE (THE TROPICS) 

● The area of the earth between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn is known as the Tropical Zone (or The Tropics). Countries in this area are hot and humid as there is a lot of sunshine. There is also abundant rainfall and as a result there are many rainforests in this zone. These places are hot as they are close to the Equator . Places near to the Equator are very hot as this is the Earth’s closest point to the Sun. 

2) THE TEMPERATE ZONE 

The area between the Arctic Circle and the Tropic of Cancer and the area between the Antarctic Circle and the Tropic of Capricorn is the TEMPERATE ZONE. Countries in this area have the 

4 seasons. Winter, Summer, Autumn and Spring. 

3) THE POLAR /FRIGID ZONE 

The area between the Antarctic Circle and the South Pole and the Arctic Circle and the North Pole is the Frigid/Polar Zone. Countries in this area have the four seasons (winter, summer, spring and autumn) but it is cold throughout the year.
