How does this work?
Today's technology is nothing short of amazing. Students today have more access to auditory information than ever before. What we all need to remember is that the access they are being given is still through electronics and does not "fix the hearing".
Students with hearing loss "mishear" on a regular basis. As their language skills develop, they become more proficient filling in auditory information that is either missed or misheard.

Clues in the Classroom
The Class (ie:Math class-· look for Math words)
The Speaker's Facial Expression
Speech Reading Clues
Assignment Boards/ Bulletin Boards
The vocabulary/ key terms
Other Students ( ie-everyone lines up, takes out homework)

Phase 1 - learning to be aware of clues
The young child needs to be taught to focus on visual clues. If the whole class is standing up to leave, the child should think, "hey, I should follow the class"
Young children also need to be taught to seat themselves where they can see the speaker and the board so they can use visual cues.
5
Phase 2 - Learning to apply Association
Students at this age are beginning to have "units" of study. It's at this time they are learning vocabulary associated with each unit. Students can be taught to look and listen for the vocabulary associated with the subject they are discussing.
6
Phase 3 - Obtaining Mastery
By Phase 3, students master observing what other students around them are doing, seating themselves in the most advantageous position.
Each room as well as using other visual supports such as assignment boards to access auditory information.
Previewing vocabulary is imperative as the concepts continue to·become more difficult.
Being familiar with key terms helps when the auditory message is not heard or unclear.
