Simple Past?

We use the simple past to talk about actions that have been completed already.

They could recent past actions or distant past actions

Their duration is not important, just that these actions have already ended.

Example: Yesterday, I ate at my favorite restaurant with my family.

Add -ed if the base form ends in:

two consonants: perform

It's a consonant-vowel-consonant base: Open

It's a consonant-vowel-y base: Stay

If base form ends in -e, just add -d.

Change= changed

Receive= received

For one-syllable consonant-vowel-consonant, double the final consonant and add -ed.

can= canned

plan= planned

stir= stirred

If base form ends in -y, change y to i and add -ed.

Try= tried

Appy= applied

Catch - caught

Come - came

Fly - flew

Hide - hid

Keep - kept

Lose - lost

Send - sent

Sleep - slept

Tell - told

See - saw

Buy - bought

Go - went

Bring - Brought

Very important: be - was/were

Form questions with "did" and the base form of the verb. Ex: Did you see the tv show last night?"

Form the negative of questions with "Did not" and the base form of the verb. Ex. "Did you not see the tv show last night?"

You answer like follows: "I saw the tv show last night" positive

"I did not see the tv show last night" negative
