Misused Words

You will need to understand the differences between these words and how they are used in sentences!

YOUR vs. YOU'RE

• your - possessive pronoun; describes something belonging to you

• you're - contraction for “you are”

Academic Vocabulary

You will need to understand the meaning of these words!

GENRE

(noun) a category of items (books, movies, tv, etc.) that have similar qualities

Examples: fiction, nonfiction, fantasy, science fiction, biography, and informational

FICTION

(noun) a type of literature that is made up or fake

Examples: novel (chapter book) or a made-up story

NONFICTION

(noun) a type of text that is true and includes facts and information

Examples: science textbook, encyclopedia, biography

Affixes and Roots

You will be introduced to prefixes, suffixes, and roots. You are responsible for knowing the definition of the word part and how to apply it to unknown words!

PRE means "before"

• preheat - (verb) to heat beforehand

• preview - (verb) to view in advance

• pregame - (adjective) prior to or before the game

• preorder - (verb) to order in advance or before

• precaution - (noun) a measure or action taken in advance

POST means "after"

• posttest - (noun) a test given after a unit is completed

• postdate - (verb) to write a future date

• postwar - (adjective) relating to a time after a war

• postpone - (verb) to put off until a later time

• postseason - (adjective) taking place after the regular season

Grammar Skill

Nouns

a person, place, thing, or idea

Common nouns:

refer to general people, places, or things. These do NOT need capital letters.

Examples:

school

store

boy

dog

phone

Proper nouns:

refer to specific people, places, or things. These DO need capital letters.

Examples:

Dallastown Area Intermediate School

Old Navy

Jack

Spot

Android

Singular or Plural?

Singular nouns: used when referring to ONE person, place, thing, or idea

Examples: pencil, story, car, house, man

Plural nouns: used when referring to MORE THAN ONE person, place, thing, or idea. To make a plural noun you USUALLY add an ‘s’

Examples: pencils, stories, cars, houses, men

Pronouns & Antecedents

Pronouns can be used to replace nouns. The noun is called the antecedent. The pronoun needs to agree in gender and number with the antecedent.

Example:

Michael ran around the track. 

Michael is the antecedent and can be replaced with the pronoun “he.”
