Last class we talked about matter and energy. In your own words describe matter and energy. ( 3 minutes)

3

Review

  • Chemistry is the study of MATTER!

  • Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

4

Learning Objectives

  • Define atoms and elements.

  • Compare atoms and elements

5

Chemical Elements

  • Scientists discovered that all of the matter in our Universe is made of about 116 elements.

  • 90 of these elements occur naturally.

  • The remaining elements are created by scientists in a lab.

6

So what are elements?

  • Elelements are a pure substance made of only one type of atom.

  • Examples of atoms include iron, silver, and gold.

  • Basically an element is a special type of matter that only has one ingredient.

7

What is not an element?

  • Compounds and molecules.

  • Example: Water contains two kinds of atoms - Hydrogen and Oxygen.

  • Example - Carbon Dioxide - Contains Carbon and Oxygen

8

Multiple Choice

Which of the following is not an element?

1

Carbon Dioxide

2

Water

3

Pure Silver

9

Multiple Choice

An element is a pure substance

1

True

2

False

10

Atoms

  • Atoms are the building blocks of matter.

  • That means all matter is made up of atoms!

  • Anything that has mass and takes up space is made of matter. All matter is made of atoms.

11

Atoms are...

  • Super small.

  • They are so small that we can't see them unless we have extremely powerful microscopes.

  • Example: A metal can that is about the size of you hand has billions of atoms. It has so many atoms that if you were to spend your whole life counting the atoms in the can that you would be unable to count them all!

12

Atoms are so small but..

  • They are made up of even smaller particles called "subatomic" particles

  • Subatomic literally means smaller than an atom.

  • The three subatomic particles are protons, electrons and neutrons. (more on these later!)

13

Multiple Choice

Which of the following is not a subatomic particle?

1

Proton

2

Neutron

3

Electron

4

Crouton

14
