Brief Introduction

Conic Sections

Conic sections were discovered during the classical Greek period, 600 to 300 BC. The early Greek studies were largely concerned with the geometric properties of conics. It was not until the early seventeenth century that the broad applicability of conics became apparent and played a prominent role in the early development of calculus.

A conic section (or simply conic) is the intersection of a plane and a double-napped cone. Notice in the figure that in the formation of the four basic conics, the intersecting plane does not pass through the vertex of the cone.

Definition

A circle is consist of all points on the plane equidistant from a fixed point called the center. The distance from the center to any point on the circle is constant and is called the radius of the circle.
