Texture refers to the different layers and parts of a musical piece and how they fit together.

Monophonic texture is characterised by a single melodic voice or instrument.

Polyphonic texture consists of different musical lines that interweave with each other.

'Poly' is Greek for many.

Homophonic texture includes a main melody supported by chords or harmony.

Counterpoint involves two or more different melodies playing together.

Unison occurs when two or more voices or instruments sing or play exactly the same thing at the same time.

Parallel motion refers to notes moving in the same direction while keeping the same interval.

Contrary motion involves notes moving in opposite directions—one up, the other down.

Thin texture is characterized by fewer layers, often involving a single instrument or voice.

Thick texture features multiple layers of sound, often involving many instruments or voices.
