Cell Biology Flashcards

All life is made of cells, and new cells come only from existing cells.

Simple cells (like bacteria) without a true nucleus or other membrane-bound internal parts.

Complex cells (like animal or plant cells) that have a nucleus and organelles enclosed by membranes.

The cell's "control center" that contains the DNA and directs protein production.

The "powerhouse" of the cell; converts food energy into ATP (the cell's fuel) via cellular respiration.

Organelles in plants that capture light energy to make sugar (photosynthesis).

A network of membranes in the cytoplasm; Smooth ER makes lipids; Rough ER makes membranes and secretory proteins.

The cell's "shipping center" that modifies, sorts, and packages proteins and lipids from the ER.

A network of protein fibers that gives the cell its shape, supports organelles, and aids in movement.

The current model of the cell membrane: a fluid layer of lipid molecules with various proteins embedded in it.
