They both decided to settle in areas with trees and rivers to use the natural resources.  They used trees to build homes and rivers to gather food.

• The French lost power to the English and sold its Louisiana Territory.

• Because of this, the United States more than doubled in size

• He thought he could reach China by sailing west from Spain, but landed off the coast of present-day Florida 

• Set up communities in Hispaniola

• Called the people where he landed “Indians” because he thought he reached the East Indies

Explored much of North and South America

• He explored the 

St. Lawrence River Area

• He found Quebec City

• He sailed around the world

Claimed land in San Francisco for England

Cruel, or mean, leader

• Explored to the Southwest to search for gold. 

• Made his men travel across the desert for many days and ran out of food and water after 45 days

• Established a new community in New Mexico

• Started the colony of Pennsylvania 

• Many people came to his colony as Quakers.  They were searching for religious freedom.

Helping to write the United States Constitution.

Mary Musgrove was an interpreter.  She spoke both languages and could help the colonist in Georgia and the local Creek American Indians communicate with each other.
