Decoding: Open and Closed Syllables

An open syllable ends with a vowel sound and does not have a consonant closing it. Example: 'go', 'me'.

A closed syllable ends with a consonant and has a vowel sound that is usually short. Example: 'cat', 'dog'.

If the syllable ends with a vowel and the vowel is long, it is an open syllable.
