Quotations and Quotation Marks

Quotation marks are used to indicate the exact words spoken by a person or to highlight a specific phrase.

If a question is quoted, the question mark goes inside the quotation marks. Example: He asked, "Are you coming?"

Punctuation marks like periods and commas typically go inside the quotation marks. Example: She said, "It's time to go."

Use quotation marks when directly quoting someone, indicating titles of short works, or highlighting specific terms.

The comma should be placed inside the quotation marks. Example: She said, "Let's eat, Grandma," to invite her.

Use quotation marks around the quoted part and ensure the rest of the sentence is grammatically correct. Example: The teacher said, "Study hard for the test."

Double quotation marks are used for direct quotes, while single quotation marks are used for quotes within quotes.

Place the first part of the quote, then the tag, and then continue the quote. Example: "I can't believe," she said, "that we won!"

If the quoted material is a question, place the question mark inside the quotation marks. Example: Did she really say, "Are we there yet?"
