Using Commas Correctly

Commas are used to separate items in a list, to indicate a pause, and to clarify meaning in sentences.

A comma should be used before 'and' in a list of three or more items (known as the Oxford comma), e.g., apples, oranges, and bananas.

'I like apples, oranges, and bananas.' is correct because it uses the Oxford comma.

A comma should be placed after 'No': 'No, I don't want to go.'

A compound sentence is made up of two independent clauses joined by a conjunction, such as 'and', 'but', or 'so'.

Both are correct, but the first one is clearer with the comma before 'and'.

Use a comma after an introductory phrase or clause to separate it from the main clause, e.g., 'After dinner, we went for a walk.'

Do not use a comma to separate two items in a simple list, e.g., 'I like apples and oranges.'

'Let's eat Grandma!' vs. 'Let's eat, Grandma!' The second sentence clarifies that you are speaking to Grandma.

Use a comma to separate the name or title of the person being addressed, e.g., 'Can you help me, Sarah?'.
