Temporary; not permanent. Example: A provisional license allows a new driver to operate a vehicle under certain conditions.

The chief city of an area; a large and significant city. Example: New York City is often referred to as a metropolis.

A bitter and abusive speech or writing. Example: The politician's diatribe against his opponent was widely criticized.

Noisy and difficult to control. Example: The obstreperous crowd made it hard for the speaker to be heard.

To absorb fully or make one's own. Example: Immigrants often assimilate into the culture of their new country.

Temporary; serving as a placeholder until something permanent is established. Example: The interim manager will oversee the team until a new one is hired.

A person without a settled home or regular work who wanders from place to place. Example: The city has programs to help vagrants find shelter.

The highest point; the peak. Example: Reaching the apex of the mountain was a thrilling experience.

Of great importance or significance. Example: The momentous decision changed the course of history.

Bad-tempered and unfriendly. Example: The surly waiter made the dining experience unpleasant.
