Mixtures and Solutions Investigation 1

A mixture is a combination of two or more substances where each substance retains its own properties.

A solution is a special type of mixture where one substance (solute) is dissolved in another (solvent).

A solute is the substance that is dissolved in a solution, such as sugar in lemonade.

A solvent is the substance that dissolves the solute in a solution, such as water in lemonade.

In a mixture, the properties of the individual substances remain unchanged.

100 g (since 1 ml of water has a mass of approximately 1 g).

100 g (the mass of the solution is the sum of the masses of the solute and solvent).

Lemonade is an example of a homogeneous mixture because it looks the same throughout.

Trail mix is an example of a heterogeneous mixture because the different components can be seen and separated.

The solid (solute) disappears and is evenly distributed in the liquid (solvent).
