"Quotation Marks"

Quotation marks are punctuation marks used to show the exact words someone said.

We use quotation marks to enclose direct speech or a quote.

You start with a quotation mark, write the spoken words, and end with another quotation mark.

The punctuation at the end of the spoken words goes inside the quotation marks.

"I love reading books," said Sarah.

The words inside quotation marks are called a quote or direct speech.

You still use quotation marks, and the question mark goes inside if it's part of the spoken words.

The correct way is: Rhonda said, "I love dogs."

The correct way is: "Where will you go?" she asked.

The correct way is: "Which store do you want to go to?" asked Marie.
